In 1935 Robert Stirrat Jr. opened the Stirrat General Store on Dollar Road across from the Dollar Mill. He, his wife Reta, son Robert and daughter Marion lived in the back of the store. Robert Stirrat Sr. operated the grocery store while Robert Jr. was working in downtown Vancouver. In 1949 Robert Jr. decided to build a new store on Dollarton Highway with his family home beneath it.
