In 1950, Joe and Reta Thornley bought the boys’ camp owned by Dr. Miller and developed the Deep Cove Motel. While getting the six cabins updated to rent, Joe continued to work as production manager for the Vancouver Herald Newspaper. A telephone was finally installed in 1951. Joe recalled ” we couldn’t possibly cope with all the people who wanted to spend their holidays in this beautiful resort area. We thought it was a wonderful place to raise a family.”
Joe was very active in the Deep Cove community and started the Seymour Lions Club in 1966.
The Society acknowledges that the land of the Seymour Communities is the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We continue to learn and celebrate the culture, history, stories, and people of the Tsleil-Waututh.
